BE MATURE BY WARREN WIERSBE
Riches, Money, Wealth, Cars, Houses, Luxury…..Ain’t that the life? How many people would trade their life for all of this? Is this the definition of happiness and contentment?
Philippians 4: 11-13: Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am to be content. I know how to be abased and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
The Bible does not discourage having wealth. Money in itself is not a sin. It’s the love of money that causes all kinds of problems.
The way you use the money or acquire the money is where the problem starts.
James 5:4 talks about warning employers to give their employees or laborers their wages and not to steal from them even if the person is not a citizen of the country (Deut 24:- 14-15).
“Thou shalt not steal” is still the law of God. As Christians, we must be faithful to pay our bills to people or companies that we owe.
Its often the case that people with vast amounts of wealth get whatever they want.
When God established Israel, He gave the people a system of courts (Deut 17:8-13). He warned the judges not to be greedy (Ex 18:21). They were not to be partial to the rich or poor (Lev 19:15). No judge was to tolerate perjury (Deut 19:16-21). Bribery was condemned by the Lord (Isa 33:15). The prophet Amos denounced the judges in his day who took bribes and “fixed” cases (Amos 5:12,15).
The Bible warns us against the securing of wealth by illegal means. God owns all wealth (Ps 50:10)
God wants us to be stewards of His wealth for His Glory, not ours.
“Do not weary yourself to gain wealth”(Prov 23:4).
After the bills are paid, how much money do we give to the work of the Lord?
Tithes and Offerings to the Lord are a great way to start giving what God has blessed you with so that you can be a blessing to your church and those that are in need around the world.
Malachi 3:10 – 12 – “Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need. I will rebuke the devourer for you, so that it will not destroy the fruits of your soil, and your vine in the field shall not fail to bear, says the Lord of hosts. Then all nations will call you blessed, for you will be a land of delight, says the Lord of hosts”.
How you use your money will speak for you on Judgement Day. Will it say “faithfulness” or “greediness”?
PRAYER: I thank you Lord for your faithfulness and the resources that You have given us not just to be blessed but to be a blessing to others. Help us to give to Your work and use the money you have given us with wisdom. Convict us if we are using our finances in the wrong way. Help us to be better stewards of our finances. AMEN.
