How do we use our tongue? To bless or to curse?
The power of speech is one of the greatest powers God has given us. With the tongue , man can praise God, pray, preach the Word and lead the lost to Christ. But with the same tongue, he can tell lies that can ruin a man’s reputation or break a person’s heart.
The 3 powers of the tongue are the power to direct, the power to destroy and the power to delight.
The power to direct can take on the role of a bible teacher. Bible teachers face a stricter judgement because their life must match what they preach.
A disciplined tongue shows maturity and control of the body.
LOOSE LIPS SINK SHIPS! And they also wreck lives.
There is so much pressure to say things that are “out of line” . We have an old nature that wants to control us and make us sin.
David prayed “O Lord, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips. Incline not mt heart to any evil thing (Psalm 141:3-4)
Our tongue can have the power to destroy someone’s character. “As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife”(Proverbs 26:20-21)
Our tongue can have the power to delight and be a “cup of refreshing water” to a thristy soul.
“The words of a man’s mouth are as deep waters and the wellspring as a flowing brook”(Prov 18:4). “The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life”(Proverbs 10:11).
Water is life-giving and our words can give life. Let is refresh one another with our words.
Water also cleanses. God’s word cleanses us and sanctifies us. Let our words be sanctified in how we speak to one another.
PRAYER: Father Lord, Thank you for your Word that convicts, challenges and loves us. Forgive us for using our tongues to hurt and tear down one another. Help us to use our words carefully when we speak to one another and be a refreshing to someone in need of Your love.
